Modular Technology
Class Overview
Modular Technology is a class covering the Engineering and Technology portion of the Massachusetts curriculum frameworks. The duration of Modular Technology is two terms. During this time students will participate in hands on learning activities in a broad range of topics.
The topics covered are: Robotics, Materials and Processes, Research and Design, Electronic Communication, Aerodynamics, Alternative Energy, Construction, Biomedical Technology, Mechanisms, Graphics and Animation, Navigation and GPS, Digital Photography, Bridges, Transportation, Orthographic Projection, Computer Aided Design, Manufacturing, Basic Electricity and Digital Sound.
Technology/engineering seeks a different outcome from science. Engineering strives to design and manufacture useful devices or materials, defined as technologies. Baseball gloves are technology, as are automobiles, computers, camcorders, polyurethane, the Golden Gate Bridge and the “Big Dig” in Boston. Each technology represents a designed solution, usually created in response to a specific practical problem.
Put in simple language the students came up with: Technology is applying what we know to what we do, to create what we need.
